Grant Thornton's multi-disciplinary waste and renewable energy
group provide industry-specific, reliable and candid
solutions to organisations across the sector, from
public authorities and not for profit organisations, to
entrepreneurial owner managed business and large corporates. Each
team is staffed by experienced sector specialists
who have immense experience and know-how in their chosen field.
This approach gives our clients a high quality service based on
sound market understanding.
Underpinned by the large number of EU waste directives, in
particular the Landfill Directive, the UK waste management market
has shown significant growth since the turn of the millennium.
There remains potential for growth in the sector, driven by the
following key factors:
- Legislation: there is a growing raft of
legislation designed to reduce reliance on landfill and encourage
responsible waste management.
- Recognising the value in waste: there is
growing recognition that there is value not only in recycled
commodities but also recycled products.
- Recognising the value in waste: large
corporates are increasingly leading the way in moving to zero
landfill and reducing carbon footprint and are therefore focused on
tailoring their supply chain accordingly.
- Energy: security of energy supply is a key
concern, together with key targets for switching from fossil fuels
to renewable sources is causing significant focus on waste as a
source of energy.
- Economics: both financial incentives and
sanctions exist to stimulate recycling and diversion from landfill
and growth in renewable energy.
Grant Thornton is well positioned to help waste
businesses capitalise on this value. A recent example was the MBO
of Raymond Brown Group in February 2010. Grant Thornton supported
the management team in the successful buyout of the Group, securing
the continuing family ethos and culture of the business. Our
involvement ensured the transaction was completed to a challenging
timetable and to the satisfaction of all involved. Grant Thornton
also provided tax advice, resulting in the vendors securing their
preferred tax position.
