DECC Energy Trends 2009
If you are writing about the 2009 Energy Trend
Statistics released today by the Department of Energy and Climate
Change, please consider the comment below from Nathan Goode,
Energy, Environment and Sustainability Partner at Grant Thornton UK
LLP;
"The fall in energy consumption in 2009 compared to 2008 is
primarily due to the economic crisis. The downturn led to a usage
cut and consequently we have achieved the carbon reduction targets.
The achievement of these targets is a good thing but government
policies in place were not enough alone to hit them. Without the
recession, we would have missed these important targets.
"These figures show we cannot afford to relent on our drive to
reduce carbon emissions as once the economy picks up again, so too
will carbon production. Consequently, we must focus on effective
policies that will achieve our carbon targets and ensure that we do
not slip back.
"Not withstanding today's statistics, the need for continued
government support for renewables is clear. The Green Investment
Bank announced in yesterday's Budget is not enough. Simpler, more
effective measures, more in keeping with Government's fiscal and
policy making roles, such as fixing the price of electricity for
renewable projects, should be put in place.
"We are making progress in the renewables sector but it isn't
enough. There is a lack of focus in renewable energy policy that
needs to be urgently addressed."
